A Comprehensive Method for Casein-based Assay of Soil Protease Activity

Tanjila Jesmin et al.

Summary: Proteolytic enzymes in soil nitrogen cycling are crucial and are commonly assayed using the casein substrate-based method; however, issues with the original protocol and controls have led to inconsistencies in measurements. A comprehensive protocol involving incubating soil with casein and colorimetric measurement of tyrosine, with corrections for controls, is recommended for enhanced accuracy. Soil-specific optimization of conditions and the use of a dual-control approach can improve the reliability of casein-based assays for soil protease activities.

How does grassland management affect physical and biochemical properties of temperate grassland soils? A review study

Sonia Mayel et al.

Summary: Increasing management intensity in grasslands, such as grazing, mowing, and fertilizer application, has significant impacts on soil quality and yield. Proper management practices can improve soil properties and grassland productivity, while incorrect practices may lead to undesirable consequences. It is important to consider soil attributes and local conditions when choosing management methods to maintain a resilient grassland system.

Soil urease inhibition by various plant extracts

Muhammad Ajmal Rana et al.

Summary: Urea is a widely used nitrogenous fertilizer that can rapidly hydrolyze to ammonia in soil, contributing to nitrogen losses. Inhibiting soil urease activity can reduce these losses, with potential inhibitors including plant extracts. This study found that extracts of Vachellia nilotica and Eucalyptus camaldulensis can effectively inhibit urease activity, prolonging urea persistence in soil and reducing nitrogen losses.

Roles of Phosphate Solubilizing Microorganisms from Managing Soil Phosphorus Deficiency to Mediating Biogeochemical P Cycle

Jiang Tian et al.

Summary: Phosphate solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) play a critical role in mediating bioavailable soil phosphorus (P), mineralizing organic P, solubilizing inorganic P minerals, and storing large amounts of P in biomass, impacting the soil P cycle and agricultural productivity. However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of the role of PSMs in P geochemical processes, highlighting the need for further research to address environmental issues and manage P deficiency effectively.

Preliminary Results of Effect of Rotational Grazing of Farmed Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) on the Biochemical Status of Soil

Barbara Futa et al.

Summary: The study found that rotational grazing of farmed deer can increase the organic carbon and total nitrogen content in soil, reduce nitrate nitrogen levels, and increase the availability of phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium forms in soil. Enzyme activity in soil from deer grazing areas was higher than in control soil, demonstrating a positive impact of cervid grazing on soil biochemical parameters.

Changes in soil microbial community during shrub encroachment process in the Inner Mongolia grassland of northern China

Xia Hu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that shrub encroachment significantly affects the microorganism biomass and community composition in grassland soils. The main factors influencing the change in microbial community during shrub encroachment processes are the inherent characteristics of plants and soil physicochemical properties.

Seasonality affects function and complexity but not diversity of the rhizosphere microbiome in European temperate grassland

Qicheng Bei et al.

Summary: The study found that bacteria were more active in winter compared to summer, while Actinobacteria and Fungi were relatively more abundant in summer. The winter microbiome showed higher activity in protein turnover and cell maintenance, while the summer microbiome had greater abundance in central carbon and amino acid metabolisms.

Drivers controlling spatial and temporal variation of microbial properties and dissolved organic forms (DOC and DON) in fen soils with persistently low water tables

Bartlomiej Glina et al.

Summary: Air temperature and precipitation were found to be the most critical environmental factors shaping microbial community structure and activity, as well as explaining the variability in DOC and DON production. Additionally, significant positive correlations were found between DOC and DON production and soil organic carbon content.
