Community Analysis of Culturable Sapwood Endophytes from Apulian Olive Varieties with Different Susceptibility to Xylella fastidiosa

Summary: Endophytes, symptomless fungal and/or bacterial microorganisms found in almost all living plant species, can suppress diseases, stimulate growth, and promote stress resistance by forming symbiotic associations with their host plants. This study focuses on the cultivable endophytes residing in the sapwood of Apulian olives, exploring their occurrence variation under the influence of seasonality, geographical coordinates, and X. fastidiosa infection status. The findings reveal the stability of sapwood-endophytic culturable communities in resistant olive varieties, as well as the seasonal and geographical fluctuation of endophytes in olive trees' sapwood. The study also identifies the diversity and occurrence frequency of fungal and bacterial genera and recovers some sapwood-inhabiting fungal and bacterial isolates, which are known to be biocontrol agents of plant pathogens. Further investigation is needed to determine the potential role of these isolates in protecting olive trees against X. fastidiosa.

Exploring cellulose nanocrystals obtained from olive tree wastes as sustainable crop protection tool against bacterial diseases

Summary: Nanomaterials in agriculture, as nanopesticides or nanocarriers, offer an innovative method for protecting crops. This research focused on synthesizing cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from olive pruning wastes and using them to control the olive knot disease. The results showed that CNCs inhibited bacterial growth and biofilm formation, and reduced bacterial survival on leaf surfaces. Additionally, CNCs had minimal negative effects on olive tree seedlings and showed promising root uptake.

Circular Hazelnut Protection by Lignocellulosic Waste Valorization for Nanopesticides Development

Summary: This study utilized hazelnut pruning and shelling residues to synthesize nanomaterials and investigated their antimicrobial properties against hazelnut bacterial blight. The results showed that these nanomaterials have the potential to serve as innovative tools for controlling hazelnut bacterial blight infections without causing detrimental effects on the growth of hazelnut plants.

Bacillus-based products for management of kiwifruit bacterial canker

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of bio-pesticides Amylo-X and Serenade Max on managing bacterial canker of kiwifruit caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae. Both bio-pesticides showed inhibitory effects on the pathogen, with Amylo-X providing better protection on both Actinidia deliciosa and Actinidia chinensis compared to Serenade Max. This study confirmed the sensitivity of the antagonistic strains to streptomycin sulphate and their colonization on kiwifruit flowers and leaves.

A Green Nanostructured Pesticide to Control Tomato Bacterial Speck Disease

Summary: The study evaluated a novel organic nanostructured pesticide composed of chitosan hydrochloride, cellulose nanocrystals, and starch. The pesticide showed effective inhibition of bacterial growth and had no negative effects when applied on tomato plants. It has the potential to reduce Pst epiphytical survival, decrease disease incidence and severity, and be a sustainable and innovative ally in Pst control strategies.

Rice Blast Lesions: an Unexplored Phyllosphere Microhabitat for Novel Antagonistic Bacterial Species Against Magnaporthe oryzae

Summary: Dark brown necrotic lesions caused by Magnaporthe oryzae on rice foliage provide a contrasting microhabitat for leaf-colonizing microbiome, with 17 bacterial species identified in these lesions showing biocontrol potential against the pathogen. Over 50% of the bacterial isolates were able to suppress the growth of M. oryzae, with certain strains triggering the expression of defense genes in rice, indicating their potential as biocontrol agents for managing rice blast disease.
