Feeding behaviour and activity as early indicators of disease in pre-weaned dairy calves

C-A Duthie et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether changes in activity and feeding behavior could serve as early warning indicators of respiratory disease in dairy calves. The results showed significant differences in the activity and feeding behavior of diseased calves compared to healthy calves before the peak day of illness, providing important clues for early intervention and optimized treatment.

Monitoring selected behaviors of calves by use of an ear-attached accelerometer for detecting early indicators of diarrhea

M. Goharshahi et al.

Summary: The study found that the lying, inactive, and active times of calves one day before the onset of diarrhea can serve as early indicators for detecting the disease. Using an accelerometer system, these behavior patterns were effectively monitored and showed potential for early detection of neonatal calf diarrhea.

Etiology and risk factors for bovine respiratory disease in pre-weaned calves on California dairies and calf ranches

Deepak et al.

Summary: The study estimated the association of BRD risk factors in pre-weaned dairy calves in California. Female calves were more negatively impacted by failure of passive immunity transfer compared to male calves. Different pathogens had varying odds ratios, with Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida showing high associations with BRD. Age, sex, immune status, and pathogens all played a role in BRD occurrence in pre-weaned dairy calves.
