Chinese College Students' Attitudes towards Animal Welfare

Sara Platto et al.

Summary: A survey on Chinese college students revealed an improvement in their attitudes towards animals and animal welfare. Students majoring in veterinary science showed the greatest differences in attitudes, and those who currently owned or had owned animals, participated in animal welfare courses, or had laboratory work involving animals scored higher in their attitude towards animal welfare.

A history of antimicrobial drugs in animals: Evolution and revolution

Peter Lees et al.

Summary: The evolution of antimicrobial drug (AMD) use in animals over the past eight decades has brought about revolutionary outcomes, with reports on various uses, misuses, and abuses increasing exponentially. While the treatment of animal diseases using AMDs will continue, it is crucial for it to be sustainable within the One Health paradigm and evolve towards more prudent, rational therapeutic uses. This review not only acknowledges concerns about antimicrobial resistance but also highlights the positive aspects and research-based advances resulting from the use of AMDs.

Dairy farmer, hoof trimmer, and veterinarian perceptions of barriers and roles in lameness management

E. M. Wynands et al.

Summary: This study explores perceptions of lameness, management roles, and barriers in the dairy industry. Participants view lameness as a complex health issue with varying opinions on causes and lack of communication between stakeholders. Cooperation between farmers, hoof trimmers, and veterinarians is needed to enhance lameness management.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs: Pharmacokinetics and Mitigation of Procedural-Pain in Cattle

Brooklyn K. Wagner et al.

Summary: Castration and disbudding procedures in cattle are recognized as painful, with frequent lack of pain mitigation in the U.S. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly used in food-animal production systems, but are not federally approved for controlling procedural pain in cattle in the U.S. Further research is needed to address the variability in pain assessment methodologies and lack of validated approaches for assessing pain in cattle during routine management practices.

Exploring farmers' understanding of and responses to endemic animal health and welfare issues in the UK

Niamh Mahon et al.

Summary: The research highlights the importance of differentiating between types of animals in understanding and addressing animal health and welfare concerns. Farmers are actively seeking knowledge on animal health practices, but individual circumstances and context play a role in how this knowledge is translated into practice. Facilitating knowledge exchange between different groups and sectors is essential in addressing animal health and welfare issues.

Does Smart Farming Improve or Damage Animal Welfare? Technology and What Animals Want

Marian Stamp Dawkins

Summary: Smart or precision farming has revolutionized crop agriculture, but concerns have been raised about its impact on animal welfare in livestock farming. While some see efficiency gains as a threat to animals, others believe in the advantages of health monitoring and individual care. The extent to which welfare is defined, the priority of high welfare standards, and the actual delivery of promised improvements will determine the ethical implications of smart farming on animal welfare.
