Origin, demographics, inbreeding, phylogenetics, and phenogenetics of Karamaniko breed, a major common ancestor of the autochthonous Greek sheep

Ioannis A. Giantsis et al.

Summary: This study explores the genetic background and coat color of the endangered Karamaniko breed of sheep in Greece. The findings suggest an origin in eastern Asia, close to breeds from central Turkey. The coat color of the breed is determined by the MC1R gene, which is associated with selective breeding based on traditional morphological characteristics. The study also reveals that inbreeding levels do not require specific mating plans to prevent negative consequences.
