Does owner handedness influence paw preference in dogs?

Kimberley Charlton et al.

Summary: This study investigated whether owner handedness influences paw preference in dogs. The results showed that left-handed owners were more likely to own a dog with a left paw bias, while right-handed owners were more likely to own a dog with a right paw bias. Additionally, gender also had an impact on paw preference, with females displaying a right paw bias and males showing a left paw bias in puppyhood and a right paw bias in older age groups.

Dogs and wolves differ in their response allocation to their owner/caregiver or food in a concurrent choice procedure

Lindsay Isernia et al.

Summary: Dogs and wolves show similar attachment-like behaviors towards their owners/caregivers, but they have different preferences when it comes to choosing between their owner/caregiver and food. Dogs do not have a clear preference, while wolves tend to prefer food.

Lateralized emotional functioning in domestic animals

Marcello Siniscalchi et al.

Summary: Studying emotional functioning is crucial for improving the welfare of domestic animals. Cognitive component of emotions, including lateralization in the animal kingdom, has been widely reported. Research on animal emotions through evaluation of cerebral lateralization is mainly based on analyzing lateralized behaviors associated with sensory and motor functions.

The effect of sex and age on paw use within a large sample of dogs (Canis familiaris)

Kirsty Laverack et al.

Summary: Sex influences handedness in dogs, with female dogs showing a higher proportion of right-paw preference. Elderly dogs tend to exhibit a stronger right-paw preference compared to younger dogs. Small sample sizes may contribute to conflicting findings on the influence of sex and age on handedness in dogs.

Laterality 2020: entering the next decade

Sebastian Ocklenburg et al.

Summary: In the upcoming decade, laterality research is expected to focus on addressing the replication crisis, increasing the diversity of research samples, utilizing meta-analysis and large-scale databank studies, exploring altered laterality in psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, and understanding the relevance of laterality research for treatment. Additionally, there will be efforts to enhance ecological validity, bridge the gap between human and non-human model species, utilize next-generation neuroimaging, integrate graph-theory and machine learning, and use mobile EEG and smartphone-based data collection to advance the field.
