Lipid metabolism analysis in liver of different chicken genotypes and impact on nutritionally relevant polyunsaturated fatty acids of meat

Alice Cartoni Mancinelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the liver lipid metabolism of three chicken genotypes using LC/MS analysis. The results showed that Ross chickens have a metabolism primarily related to storage and structural roles, Leghorn chickens exhibited higher levels of n-3 NEFA, unsaturation level, and gene expression, and LxR chickens showed intermediate values between Ross and Leghorn chickens.

Foraging Behavior Shows Individual-Consistency Over Time, and Predicts Range Use in Slow-Growing Free-Range Male Broiler Chickens

Vitor Hugo Bessa Ferreira et al.

Summary: Recent research shows that individual behavioral differences may be linked to range use in free-range chickens. This study aimed to describe the behavioral budget of slow-growing male broiler chickens during the rearing period and relate observed behavioral differences to range use. The results suggest that foraging behavior is consistently related to range use and can serve as a useful predictor for range utilization in free-range broiler chickens.

Dietary Hermetia illucens Larvae Meal Improves Growth Performance and Intestinal Barrier Function of Weaned Pigs Under the Environment of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88

Qingsong Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that the addition of Hermetia illucens larvae meal (HI) significantly improved the growth performance of weaned pigs and reduced the incidence of diarrhea. HI also enhanced intestinal barrier function, regulated inflammatory response, promoted intestinal immune-related gene expression, improved intestinal microbiota composition and diversity, and increased the concentrations of beneficial substances in the intestines. Furthermore, HI influenced histone acetylation and the TLR2-NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathway.

Summary: Organic monogastric agriculture faces challenges in obtaining regional and organic protein-rich ingredients, but novel feed ingredients like starfish, mussel, insect, seaweed, and forage crops show potential to partly substitute traditional protein sources for fulfilling protein requirements. Improvements in production and processing are needed to enhance protein quality and sustainability of these new ingredients.

Environmental sustainability assessment of poultry productions through life cycle approaches: A critical review

Michele Costantini et al.

Summary: Poultry production is a key pillar of the human food system that is experiencing continuous growth globally. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach is increasingly used to provide information on poultry production chains, focusing on environmental impacts. This study critically reviewed the current state of LCA application in the poultry sector, highlighting methodological differences and shortcomings in the literature. Key findings include the predominance of chicken chains in analysis, with the agricultural phase significantly impacting finished food products. Discussions center on parameters influencing environmental performance and potential mitigation strategies, with identified research topics aimed at enhancing sustainability in this supply chain.

Working for food is related to range use in free-range broiler chickens

Vitor Hugo Bessa Ferreira et al.

Summary: Individual differences in range use of free-range broiler chickens are related to their motivation to contrafreeload, with high rangers showing a preference for difficult-to-access food. Foraging behavior was significantly different between low rangers and high rangers in their home environment, indicating that individual behavioral variations may impact range use.

How the kinetic behavior of organic chickens affects productive performance and blood and meat oxidative status: a study of six poultry genotypes

Simona Mattioli et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the relationship between kinetic behavior, carcass characteristics, oxidative status (blood and meat), and meat fatty acid profiles of 6 organically reared slower growing chicken genotypes. The results showed a strong positive association between kinetic behaviors and blood and meat oxidation, a medium positive association with fatty acid profile and nutritional indexes, and a negative association with productive performance loads. Different genotypes exhibited varying levels of activity and oxidative balance, with some genotypes showing a worse oxidative balance despite higher kinetic activity.
