New data on the mitochondrial genome of Nematocera (lower Diptera): features, structures and phylogenetic implications

Xiao Zhang et al.

Summary: Nematocera is a taxonomically diverse group with many important agricultural and sanitary pests. By sequencing and annotating the mitochondrial genomes of eight nematoceran species, the study found that their gene arrangement is identical to the ancestral arrangement. The phylogenetic analysis supports both new and traditional classifications.

Mitogenomes provide new insights into the evolutionary history of Prodiamesinae (Diptera: Chironomidae)

Xiao-Long Lin et al.

Summary: Evolutionary analysis of Prodiamesinae has been challenging due to lack of information, and its phylogenetic relationship with Orthocladiinae is still uncertain. However, this study sequenced ten complete mitogenomes of Orthocladiinae sensu lato, revealing conservation in gene arrangement and nucleotide composition, as well as protein-coding genes under purifying selection. The findings suggest a re-classification of Orthocladiinae by incorporating Prodiamesinae as a subgroup.

Beyond Drosophila: resolving the rapid radiation of schizophoran flies with phylotranscriptomics

Keith M. Bayless et al.

Summary: This study utilized transcriptome data to investigate the phylogenetic relationships of schizophoran flies, supporting the division of most acalyptrate fly groups into four major lineages consistently across analyses. The research revealed the primary branching patterns and highlighted important sister group relationships, laying a foundation for future comparative research.

The mitochondrial genome of Nothybus sumatranus (Diptera: Nothybidae)

Jiale Zhou et al.

Summary: The mitochondrial genome of Nothybus sumatranus is the first reported from the family Nothybidae, with a nearly complete genome length of 16,128 bp and containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes. The study also noted the genome organization, nucleotide composition, codon usage, and predicted secondary structures of tRNAs, and supported the sister relationship between Diopsoidea and Nerioidea based on a phylogenetic tree using Bayesian inference (BI) method.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Syritta pipiens (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Syrphidae) and phylogenetic analysis

Ya-Qin Shi et al.

Summary: The complete mitochondrial genome of Syritta pipiens was sequenced and analyzed, revealing a strong AT bias in nucleotide composition. Phylogenetic analysis placed S. pipiens within the clade of Eristalinae, but more molecular data is needed for further study.
