Biological responses of Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) to sub-lethal concentrations of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana

Katayoon Kheradmand et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the significant impact of B. bassiana on some biological parameters of T. urticae, showing that at sub-lethal concentrations, this fungus drastically affected the population parameters of the mite pest.

Insects defend against fungal infection by employing microRNAs to silence virulence-related genes

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that mosquitoes increase expression of let-7 and miR-100 microRNAs as the pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana penetrates into the host hemocoel. These microRNAs translocate into fungal hyphae to specifically silence virulence-related genes, enhancing the virulence of B. bassiana strains expressing anti-let-7 and anti-miR-100. This reveals an insect defense strategy involving the use of microRNAs to suppress pathogen virulence-related genes, providing resistance to infection.

Effect of Beauveria bassiana-Seed Treatment on Zea mays L. Response against Spodoptera frugiperda

Laiju Kuzhuppillymyal-Prabhakarankutty et al.

Summary: In laboratory experiments, it was found that treating maize plants with Beauveria bassiana prolonged the larval stage of Spodoptera frugiperda and resulted in fewer male moths. Field trials also showed that seed treatment with B. bassiana reduced infestation of maize plants by S. frugiperda, indicating its potential as a biocontrol agent.

Susceptibility of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) Pupae to Soil Applied Entomopathogenic Fungal Biopesticides

Reynardt Erasmus et al.

Summary: The tomato pinworm is a destructive insect pest of tomatoes in Africa, with many farmers relying on chemical insecticides for control, leading to resistance issues. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using entomopathogenic fungi as biopesticides, particularly against the pupal stage of the pest. Soil drench applications of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae showed high mortality rates in pupae, reducing fecundity in surviving moths without affecting fertility. This research highlights the potential of using biopesticides in integrated pest management programs for controlling the tomato pinworm in different life stages.

Molecular phylogeny and pathogenicity of indigenous Beauveria bassiana against the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta Meyrick 1917 (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), in Ethiopia

Birhan Aynalem et al.

Summary: The study isolated 27 indigenous Beauveria strains from different types of soil in Ethiopia, with 12 of them screened based on their biological efficiency index (BEI). These isolates showed promising pathogenicity against Tuta absoluta, with five of them highly effective in laboratory bioassays and nearly monophyletic characters. Further field evaluation is needed for mass production.
