Independent associations of thyroid-related hormones with hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance in euthyroid overweight/obese Chinese adults

Danyan Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that free triiodothyronine (FT3) was independently associated with hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance in euthyroid overweight/obese Chinese adults, while free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) showed no significant association.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease as a metabolic disease in humans: A literature review

Bertrand Cariou et al.

Summary: This systematic literature review identified various evidence on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as a metabolic disorder, highlighting the complex interplay between NAFLD and metabolic dysfunction. Multidisciplinary collaboration and personalized treatment protocols are urgently needed to address the overall metabolic risk reduction and treatment for NAFLD/NASH patients.

NAFLD: Reporting Histologic Findings in Clinical Practice

Elizabeth M. Brunt et al.

Summary: Liver biopsy plays a crucial role in the evaluation of NASH, providing specific means of diagnosis and patient identification. This White Paper sponsored by AASLD NASH Task Force focuses on histopathological evaluation of NASH, distinctions from other liver diseases, and special situations such as advanced fibrosis and pediatric cases. Semiquantitative methods for evaluating disease activity and fibrosis are discussed, along with scoring tables and a suggested reporting model. Figures are included to highlight key histopathologic elements of NASH.

The complex link between NAFLD and type 2 diabetes mellitus - mechanisms and treatments

Giovanni Targher et al.

Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have a complex relationship with each other, influencing the risk of adverse clinical outcomes. The severity of NAFLD is directly related to the risk of developing T2DM, while improvement of NAFLD may lower the risk of T2DM.

Prevalence and factors associated with NAFLD detected by vibration controlled transient elastography among US adults: Results from NHANES 2017-2018

Xiaotao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence of NAFLD and significant NAFLD fibrosis in the U.S. adult population using data from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Factors associated with these conditions included obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, inadequate physical activity, high waist circumstance, and hypertension. The study found that NAFLD and significant NAFLD fibrosis are highly prevalent in the U.S. general population.
