Competitive sorption of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn from stormwater runoff by five low-cost sorbents; Effects of co-contaminants, humic acid, salinity and pH

Narges Esfandiar et al.

Summary: The study found that BFS and CCF demonstrated the highest sorption capacity of all metals (>95% removal) in all systems. However, the presence of other contaminants in solution reduced metals removal for other sorbents, and the removal efficiency ranking among metals was generally Cr-Cu-Pb > Ni > Cd > Zn in single-metal, multi-metal, and multi-contaminant solutions.

Adsorption behavior of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) on aged microplastics in antibiotics-heavy metals coexisting system

Ziqing Zhou et al.

Summary: Antibiotics have complex impacts on the adsorption behavior of heavy metals on aged microplastics, showing opposite effects on Cu(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption. The presence of antibiotics seemed to have no significant effect on the type of adsorption isotherm and kinetic model in most Cu(II) adsorption systems.

Effective removal of heavy metals in industrial wastewater with novel bioactive catalyst enabling hybrid approach

Govindan Rajivgandhi et al.

Summary: This study focused on screening heavy metal resistant actinomycete strains from contaminated soil samples, identifying Nocardiopsis dassonvillei as a highly resistant strain. Through various experiments, it was confirmed that Nocardiopsis dassonvillei produces high bioflocculent and exopolysaccharide, with a strong heavy metal sorption ability against Cd, Cr, Pb, and Hg. Moreover, the study suggests that Nocardiopsis dassonvillei could serve as an excellent biological source for heavy metal reduction in waste water, providing an alternative method for effective removal of heavy metals towards sustainable environmental management.

Modelling and efficiency evaluation of the continuous biosorption of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) from water by agricultural waste materials

Nevena Blagojev et al.

Summary: This study examined the efficiency of biosorption of copper and chromium ions using different agricultural waste biomass and found that the process consists of two steps when using poplar sawdust and wheat straw for copper ions biosorption. The applicability of a parallel sigmoidal (PS) model to describe the biosorption process was confirmed, showing that the process involves two simultaneous, kinetically different steps. The findings highlight the potential for adjusting biosorption conditions to enhance the efficiency of heavy metal ion adsorption.
