Trending approaches on demulsification of crude oil in the petroleum industry

Kehinde Temitope Alao et al.

Summary: The complexity of crude oil emulsions presents a major challenge in the oil industry for phase separation and demulsification methods. Efforts to develop efficient demulsification methods have been increasing, but many emulsions remain difficult to break in short periods of time. Various techniques and approaches have been studied to find the best method for demulsification.

Application of magnetic nanoparticles in demulsification: A review on synthesis, performance, recyclability, and challenges

Ahmad A. Adewunmi et al.

Summary: The use of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as demulsifiers is growing rapidly due to their recyclability and high surface area. Factors such as dosage, pH, salinity, hydrophilicity, and shape play crucial roles in designing a successful demulsifier using MNPs. Regeneration and recyclability of MNPs after demulsification, as well as challenges and recommendations for their use in emulsions, are highlighted in this review.

Extracted quartz as efficient natural demulsifier for crude oil-water emulsions: Effect of monovalent/divalent salts, pH and modeling study

Ahmad A. Adewunmi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the application of quartz particles as demulsifiers in the petroleum industry, assessing their effectiveness at displacing natural emulsifiers and separating water and crude oil under different salt conditions and temperatures. Quartz showed slightly higher demulsification efficiencies in emulsions containing NaCl salt, and exhibited good tolerance to pH changes, performing better in alkaline conditions. The experimental outcomes were modeled using a machine learning algorithm with significant matches and correlations.
