Early gastric cancer detection in high-risk patients: a multicentre randomised controlled trial on the effect of second-generation narrow band imaging

Naohiro Yoshida et al.

Summary: This study conducted an open-label, randomized controlled trial in high-risk gastric cancer patients, finding that 2G-NBI did not increase the detection rate of early gastric cancer. Although there were differences in the positive predictive value of suspicious lesions between the WLI group and 2G-NBI group, overall sensitivity still needs improvement.

Magnifying endoscopy in detecting early gastric cancer A network meta-analysis of prospective studies

Summary: Magnifying endoscopy (ME) is effective in improving the detection rate of early gastric cancer (EGC), especially when combined with narrow-band imaging (NBI) or blue laser imaging (BLI).

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Current Status of Photodynamic Diagnosis for Gastric Tumors

Hiroki Kurumi et al.

Summary: The recent development and widespread use of image-enhanced endoscopy and magnifying endoscopy have improved the endoscopic diagnosis of gastric cancer, but still remains subjective. Photodynamic endoscopic diagnosis (PDED) based on fluorescence of photosensitizers provides an objective evaluation independent of the endoscopist's experience and shows potential in tumor detection, particularly in the diagnosis of early gastric cancer. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm the usefulness of PDED.

Fundamentals, Diagnostic Capabilities, and Perspective of Narrow Band Imaging for Early Gastric Cancer

Hiroki Kurumi et al.

Summary: The development of image-enhanced endoscopy, particularly narrow band imaging (NBI), has greatly improved the qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of gastrointestinal tumors. Various diagnostic algorithms based on NBI, such as vessel plus surface (VS) classification and magnifying endoscopy simple diagnostic algorithm for early gastric cancer (MESDA-G), have been proposed to aid in the diagnosis of early gastric cancer. Additionally, the usefulness of NBI in differentiating gastric cancer from gastritis, determining lesion extent, inferring histopathological type, and diagnosing depth has been investigated.
