Production of erythrocyte microparticles in a sub-hemolytic environment

James P. Buerck et al.

Summary: Micro particles are produced by various cells due to different stimuli in the circulatory system. Shear stress can result in damage to red blood cells and lead to the production of microparticles. High shear stress and longer exposure time can increase the concentration of red blood cell microparticles, which may indicate sub-hemolytic damage to red blood cells.

Biophysical and rheological biomarkers of red blood cell physiology and pathophysiology

Umut A. Gurkan

Summary: Recent research has shown that alterations in red cell biophysical properties and blood rheology are linked to various hematologic and circulatory disorders. Emerging targeted or curative therapies aim to improve red cell pathophysiology, particularly in the context of inherited hemoglobin disorders like sickle cell disease. Advances in microfluidic biomarker assays offer new opportunities for assessing and treating major red cell ailments.

Calcium/protein kinase C signaling mechanisms in shear-induced mechanical responses of red blood cells

Elif Ugurel et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of the Ca2+/PKC signaling pathway on RBC mechanical responses and impaired deformability. The findings suggest that the combination of drugs with Ca2+ significantly increases RBC deformability under continuous shear stress, with Verapamil particularly improving Ca2+-induced impairments. Calpeptin and Chelerythrine showed significant improvements in deformability after continuous shear stress exposure.

Piezo1-Mediated Mechanotransduction Promotes Cardiac Hypertrophy by Impairing Calcium Homeostasis to Activate Calpain/Calcineurin Signaling

Yuhao Zhang et al.

Summary: Hemodynamic overload leads to pathological cardiac hypertrophy, which is a major risk factor for heart failure. Piezo1, a novel mechanosensitive ion channel, plays a crucial role in the development of cardiac hypertrophy and may be a potential therapeutic target for cardiac dysfunction.

cAMP Compartmentalization in Cerebrovascular Endothelial Cells: New Therapeutic Opportunities in Alzheimer's Disease

Dolores Vina et al.

Summary: The vascular hypothesis suggests that dysfunction of cerebral microvasculature could lead to Alzheimer's disease, with an abnormal increase in blood-brain barrier permeability playing a key role in this process. The role of cAMP in maintaining blood-brain barrier permeability is essential, with its compartmentalization affecting endothelial barrier function and potentially offering a new therapeutic approach for AD treatment.
