Plasma levels of oxysterols 7-ketocholesterol and cholestane-3β, 5α, 6β-triol in patients with allergic asthma

Behnoush Nasr Zanjani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the levels of oxysterols and lipid peroxidation products in allergic asthma patients and healthy controls, and provide information about the involvement of lipid peroxidation in allergic asthma. The results showed that plasma levels of oxysterols and lipid peroxidation products were significantly higher in allergic asthma patients compared to healthy controls, suggesting their involvement in the pathogenesis of allergic asthma.

A Blunted GPR183/Oxysterol Axis During Dysglycemia Results in Delayed Recruitment of Macrophages to the Lung During Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection

Minh Dao Ngo et al.

Summary: In tuberculosis patients, reduced expression of GPR183 in diabetes patients is associated with more severe tuberculosis. Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection leads to the production of oxidized cholesterols in the lung, facilitating the recruitment of immune cells expressing the oxysterol-sensing receptor GPR183 to the site of infection. The GPR183/oxysterol axis is blunted during dysglycemia, resulting in delayed macrophage recruitment.

Immune-related oxysterol modulates neuromuscular transmission via non-genomic liver X receptor-dependent mechanism

Guzel F. Zakyrjanova et al.

Summary: Inflammatory reactions can induce changes in the neuromuscular system. The oxysterol 25-hydroxycholesterol (25HC) may regulate neurotransmission and contribute to neuromuscular activity via activation of lipid raft-associated LXRs. 25HC-mediated increase in ROS production may modulate signaling pathways involving estrogen receptor alpha - Gi-protein - G beta gamma - phospholipase C - Ca2+ - protein kinase C.

The cholesterol metabolite 25-hydroxycholesterol restrains the transcriptional regulator SREBP2 and limits intestinal IgA plasma cell differentiation

Bruno C. Trindade et al.

Summary: The cholesterol metabolite 25-hydroxycholesterol impacts intestinal B cell response by restricting plasma cell differentiation and promoting IgA secretion. The 25-HC-SREBP2 axis plays a crucial role in shaping the humoral response at the intestinal barrier, revealing insights into the effect of high dietary cholesterol on intestinal immunity.

Sterol auto-oxidation adversely affects human motor neuron viability and is a neuropathological feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

James C. Dodge et al.

Summary: Aberrant cholesterol homeostasis is implicated in the pathogenesis of ALS, with increased cholesterol oxidation found in the spinal cord of ALS models and patients. Auto-oxidized sterols were toxic to human motor neurons, suggesting that unregulated sterol oxidation may contribute to neuronal death in ALS. Developing therapeutic strategies to restore cholesterol homeostasis in the spinal cord could potentially lead to ALS treatment.

25-Hydroxycholesterol metabolism is altered by lung inflammation, and its local administration modulates lung inflammation in mice

Pauline Bottemanne et al.

Summary: Inflammation is a critical component of many lung diseases, and studies have shown that only one type of oxysterol levels change during lung inflammation, with different effects on its levels in different disease models. Experiments demonstrated that this oxysterol levels increased in the acute lung inflammation model, leading to a decrease in inflammatory cytokine secretion.
