Radioactive iodine and female fertility

Pino Navarro et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of radioactive iodine (I-131) treatment on women's fertility. The results showed that a significant percentage of women treated with I-131 experienced early menopause and reduced levels of Antimullerian Hormone. Some women also reported a negative impact on their ability to conceive.

The Effect of Radioactive Iodine Therapy on Ovarian Function and Fertility in Female Thyroid Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Marceline W. Piek et al.

Summary: Thyroid cancer is a common carcinoma in adolescents and young adults, with surgery and RAI treatment being the standard care. Studies show that RAI therapy may affect ovarian function and fertility in women, with menstrual irregularities and amenorrhea reported in a portion of patients. While RAI-treated women may experience menopause at a slightly younger age, there is no significant decrease in pregnancy rates observed.

Obstetric outcomes in thyroid cancer survivors: A retrospective cohort study

Dongming Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that serum levels of thyroid stimulating hormone and free thyroxine were significantly different in thyroid cancer patients compared to the control group. However, after adjusting for relevant factors, thyroid cancer survivors did not have higher risks of most adverse obstetric outcomes except for abnormally invasive placentation.

Tasuku Okui

Summary: This study identified differences in trends of artificial and spontaneous fetal mortality rates between working and jobless households, with the difference decreasing in some periods but remaining significant in certain maternal ages, periods, and cohorts. The trend of birth cohort effects was particularly different between the two types of households for both the artificial and spontaneous fetal mortality rates.

Pregnancy outcomes in children, adolescents, and young adults that survived cancer: A nationwide survey in Japan

Toshiaki Yasuoka et al.

Summary: This study examined the current status of pregnancy outcomes among female cancer survivors in Japan, finding that advanced maternal age was common and these survivors often gave birth to preterm and low birth weight infants. Healthcare providers should consider the likelihood of adverse pregnancy outcomes when planning counseling and perinatal care for cancer survivors.
