From LI-RADS Classification to HCC Pathology: A Retrospective Single-Institution Analysis of Clinico-Pathological Features Affecting Oncological Outcomes after Curative Surgery

Leonardo Centonze et al.

Summary: This study investigates the correlation between LI-RADS classification and pathological characteristics of HCC, as well as the prognostic implications on patient survival. The results suggest that LR-5 class is associated with unfavorable pathological features, while other factors such as patient age, performance status, and liver disease severity also play significant roles in postoperative outcomes.

Dynamic Changes in Pre- and Postoperative Levels of Inflammatory Markers and Their Effects on the Prognosis of Patients with Gastric Cancer

Jian-Xian Lin et al.

Summary: The changes in Lymphocyte-Monocyte Ratio (LMR) before and 12 months after surgery are crucial for predicting the prognosis of gastric cancer patients. Patients with high LMR at 12 months post-surgery have a significantly higher 5-year overall survival rate, regardless of their pre-surgery LMR levels. Incorporating post-12-month LMR into the TNM staging system can significantly improve prognostic accuracy.

Epidemiology of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Katherine A. McGlynn et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is a major global health concern. While HBV and HCV remain important risk factors for HCC, efforts in vaccination and treatment are showing promise. However, the increasing prevalence of metabolic risk factors like obesity and diabetes, as well as other factors like excessive alcohol consumption, present ongoing challenges in the prevention of liver cancer.

Proton beam radiotherapy vs. radiofrequency ablation for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma: A randomized phase III trial

Tae Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: The study compared proton beam radiotherapy (PBT) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) outcomes in patients with recurrent/residual HCC, demonstrating non-inferiority of PBT in terms of 2-year local progression-free survival (LPFS). The most common adverse events with PBT were radiation pneumonitis and decreased leukocyte counts, while RFA resulted in increased alanine aminotransferase levels and abdominal pain. PBT was found to be a tolerable and safe treatment option for patients with small recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma.

Prediction of early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma after resection using digital pathology images assessed by machine learning

Akira Saito et al.

Summary: In this study, the prediction of early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma after resection was attempted using digital pathologic images and machine learning. The support vector machine (SVM) method showed a high accuracy in differentiating between the recurrence groups. The combination of digital pathology and machine learning offers a potential method for objective postoperative follow-up observation.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
