Dacryolithiasis diagnosis and treatment: a 25-year experience using nasal endoscopy

Alexis Khorrami Kashi et al.

Summary: This study described the clinical and radiological findings associated with the presence of dacryoliths in patients who underwent surgery, and assessed the efficacy of two procedures. The study found that evacuation of dacryolithiasis through its physiological track had similar results to dacryocystorhinostomy in patients with dacryolithiasis.

Metagenomics of the lacrimal sac in primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction: the Lacriome paper 1

Summary: This study focused on the metagenomics of lacrimal sac samples from patients with PANDO, revealing the presence of diverse microbial communities including bacteria, viruses, and archaea.

Long-term outcomes of StopLoss™ Jones tube (SLJT) and minimally invasive conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy

Rafal Nowak et al.

Summary: This study assessed the long-term outcomes of MICDCR with StopLoss (TM) Jones tubes in patients, finding good anatomical and functional success rates. However, inferior tube migration was identified as a significant complication that needs attention. The results emphasize the importance of continuous care as long as the tube remains in situ.

Comparison of digital subtraction dacryocystography and dacryoendoscopy in patients with epiphora

Seon Ha Bae et al.

Summary: DCG and dacryoendoscopy demonstrated moderate agreement in detecting lacrimal pathway obstruction. Dacryoendoscopy allowed for comprehensive investigations of the lacrimal pathway and helped explain unidentified factors associated with lacrimal pathway obstruction in patients with epiphora.

Assessment of conjunctival flora in eyes with lacrimal passage obstruction before and after successful dacryoendoscopic recanalisation

Takahiro Hiraoka et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that physiological recanalisation of the lacrimal passage after dacryoendoscopic surgery significantly reduced the positivity rate of conjunctival sac culture and the number of detected microorganism strains. It also decreased the presence of potentially pathogenic and drug-resistant bacteria while increasing the proportion of indigenous bacteria, leading to a normalization of conjunctival flora.

Transcanalicular endoscopic dacryoplasty in patients with primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction

Sang Min Lee et al.

Summary: By investigating the lacrimal drainage system in PANDO patients with dacryoendoscopy, common findings of obstruction include mucus and stones in the lacrimal sac. Membranous obstruction and stenosis can be managed through recanalization under direct visualization, with the success rate of structural obstruction significantly higher than secretory obstruction.

Long-term outcome of transcanalicular microdrill dacryoplasty: a minimally invasive alternative for dacryocystorhinostomy

Natasa Mihailovic et al.

Summary: Transcanalicular microdrill dacryoplasty (MDP) is a minimally invasive surgical approach with a high success rate for treating nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Long-term follow-up results show that most patients still have complete resolution of symptoms and overall satisfaction with the procedure is high.

Management of proximal lacrimal obstructions: a rationale

Francesco M. Quaranta-Leoni et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed 775 consecutive patients with proximal lacrimal obstructions to identify the rationale for correct surgical treatment. Results indicated the importance of patient history and accurate diagnosis in surgical decision-making. Less invasive techniques such as trephination and intubation may be effective in selected cases with no associated lower lacrimal obstruction. Further research with randomized clinical trials and standardized protocols are needed to validate these findings.
