Management of proximal lacrimal obstructions: a rationale

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed 775 consecutive patients with proximal lacrimal obstructions to identify the rationale for correct surgical treatment. Results indicated the importance of patient history and accurate diagnosis in surgical decision-making. Less invasive techniques such as trephination and intubation may be effective in selected cases with no associated lower lacrimal obstruction. Further research with randomized clinical trials and standardized protocols are needed to validate these findings.
