Sexual orientation in transgender individuals: results from the longitudinal ENIGI study

J. Defreyne et al.

Summary: Research shows that sexual orientation of transgender individuals does not change during hormonal affirming process, and it is not associated with sex steroids or surgery. The majority of individuals' partners' gender identity matches their sexual orientation, and the number of individuals with partners increases after gender-affirming care.

Positive and Negative Affect Changes during Gender-Affirming Hormonal Treatment: Results from the European Network for the Investigation of Gender Incongruence (ENIGI)

Imke Matthys et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of initiating gender-affirming hormonal treatment on affect in transgender individuals. Results showed a decline in positive affect during the first three months for both transmen and transwomen, with a subsequent steady state in transwomen and a second decline in transmen at 18 months. Negative affect declined in transmen during the first year, while it remained stable in transwomen throughout the follow-up period.

Psychological Wellbeing and Perceived Social Acceptance in Gender Diverse Individuals

Alessia Romani et al.

Summary: This study highlights the differences in psychological wellbeing between binary and gender diverse individuals, with gender diverse individuals experiencing less intense gender dysphoria but higher levels of depression and anxiety. It also shows that perceived discrimination and humiliation partially mediate depressive symptomatology in gender diverse individuals, and that gender diverse assigned male at birth (AMAB) individuals seek non-standard hormonal treatments more often than their binary counterparts.

Summary: Total HDL-CEC decreased during HT in trans women, with a specific reduction in ABCA1 CEC. This finding might contribute to a higher CVD risk.

Effect of gender-affirming hormone use on coagulation profiles in transmen and transwomen

Luuk J. J. Scheres et al.

Summary: The study found that transgender women showed a more procoagulant profile after undergoing GAHT treatment, while transgender men did not exhibit significant procoagulant changes. Age and route of administration influenced the changes in coagulation parameters.

Use of high dose cyproterone acetate and risk of intracranial meningioma in women: cohort study

Alain Weill et al.

Summary: An observational cohort study conducted in France involving 253777 girls and women aged 7-70 found a strong dose-effect relationship between the use of high dose cyproterone acetate and the risk of intracranial meningiomas. The risk significantly reduced after treatment discontinuation. Specifically, meningiomas located in the anterior skull base and middle skull base, particularly involving the spheno-orbital region, appeared to be specific to cyproterone acetate.

Is there a need for liver enzyme monitoring in people using gender-affirming hormone therapy?

Theresa A. Stangl et al.

Summary: A multicenter prospective study on 1933 transgender individuals starting hormone therapy between 2010 and 2020 showed a very low incidence of liver injury, indicating that liver enzyme monitoring is not necessary for this population.

Does Gender-Affirming Hormonal Treatment Affect 30-Year Cardiovascular Risk in Transgender Persons? A Two-Year Prospective European Study (ENIGI)

Carlotta Cocchetti et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the cardiovascular risk changes in transgender individuals after receiving gender affirming hormonal treatment (GAHT). It showed that hormone treatment led to unfavorable lipid changes and increased long-term CVD risk in transmen, while lipid levels improved in transwomen without significant changes in CVD risk.

Summary: The study found that low-dose cyproterone acetate (CPA) treatment is as effective as high-dose treatment for transgender women and may be safer. However, the study is limited by a relatively small sample size.

Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators: A Potential Option For Non-Binary Gender-Affirming Hormonal Care?

Jane Y. Xu et al.

Summary: Gender dysphoria is the distress associated with having a gender identity different from one's birth-assigned sex. Hormonal treatment guidelines primarily cater to those transitioning from male to female or vice versa, leaving limited options for non-binary trans individuals seeking an androgynous appearance. There is potential for Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs) to be a gender-affirming treatment for non-binary individuals assigned male at birth (AMAB), but further research is needed on their effects and safety.
