Inhaled isoflurane via the anaesthetic conserving device versus propofol for sedation of invasively ventilated patients in intensive care units in Germany and Slovenia: an open-label, phase 3, randomised controlled, non-inferiority trial

Andreas Meiser et al.

Summary: This study compared the sedation efficacy of isoflurane and propofol in adult ICU patients on mechanical ventilation and found that isoflurane was non-inferior to propofol, with lower opioid dose intensity and more frequent spontaneous breathing. Isoflurane also led to shorter extubation times and faster wake-up compared to propofol, with comparable safety profiles.

Use of volatile agents for sedation in the intensive care unit: A national survey in France

Raiko Blondonnet et al.

Summary: The survey found that most ICU medical directors in France were knowledgeable about inhaled ICU sedation, but its actual use was limited. The main reasons for not using inhaled ICU sedation were device availability, lack of medical interest, lack of familiarity or knowledge about the technique, and elevated cost. Despite this, the majority of respondents were satisfied with the use of inhaled sedation and viewed it as a seductive alternative to intravenous sedation.

Variation in Early Management Practices in Moderate-to-Severe ARDS in the United States The Severe ARDS: Generating Evidence Study

Nida Qadir et al.

Summary: A multicenter observational cohort study in the United States showed treatment variability in ARDS patients, with early adherence to lung protective ventilation associated with lower center mortality. Opportunities for improving ARDS outcomes exist due to substantial center-to-center variability in management, and future collaboration is needed to identify additional treatment-level factors influencing center-level outcomes.
