Acquisition of oral microbiota is driven by environment, not host genetics

Chiranjit Mukherjee et al.

Summary: The study found that the host genetics have little impact on the transmission of oral microbiota, while contact and environment play a more significant role. As children grow older, they become more similar to their mothers in terms of oral bacterial community profiles. The findings suggest that microbial transmission is determined more by shared environment than genetics.
