Optimizing the Catalytic Activity of Pd-Based Multinary Alloys toward Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Wissam A. Saidi

Summary: The discovery of a low-cost PdAuAgTi alloy as a catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with excellent activity and low overpotential is reported in this study. A model based on first-principles methods accelerated with deep learning is developed to calculate the adsorption energy on the alloy surface, which provides precise maps of the catalytic activity distribution. The study also reveals that the ORR activity of the PdAuAgTi alloy is optimum in a specific composition range.

Lattice distortion releasing local surface strain on high-entropy alloys

Christian M. Clausen et al.

Summary: The study found that the inherent distortion of lattice structure in high-entropy alloys releases the local strain effect on adsorption energy, as the atomic environment surrounding the binding atom settles into a relaxed structure. This phenomenon is observed even for clusters of atoms with sizes significantly deviating from their embedded atomic environment. This elucidates an important aspect of binding site interaction with neighboring atoms and constitutes a step towards a more accurate theoretical model for estimating the reactivity of HEA surfaces.

Surface electrocatalysis on high-entropy alloys

Jack K. Pedersen et al.

Summary: Electrocatalysis on high-entropy alloys (HEAs) is a young field with limited theoretical understanding. Scaling relations and Bronsted-Evans-Polanyi relations on HEAs are crucial for identifying activity descriptors, with some relations holding while others disappear, posing future challenges for modeling electrocatalysis on HEAs.

Optimization of High-Entropy Alloy Catalyst for Ammonia Decomposition and Ammonia Synthesis

Wissam A. Saidi et al.

Summary: The successful synthesis of high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles opens up a new frontier in materials science, particularly in the fields of catalysis, structural alloys, and energetic materials. Using computational modeling, a model was built to rapidly calculate the adsorption energy of H, N, and NHx species on CoMoFeNiCu alloy surfaces, showing that a specific Co/Mo ratio can enhance the ammonia decomposition activity.
