Hard X-ray transient grating spectroscopy on bismuth germanate

Jeremy R. Rouxel et al.

Summary: Optical-domain transient grating spectroscopy is a versatile background-free four-wave-mixing technique used to probe the vibrational, magnetic, and electronic degrees of freedom in materials. The recent development of coherent X-ray free-electron laser sources has extended this technique to the X-ray regime, offering advantages such as large penetration depth, element specificity, and short wavelengths for excitation grating with unprecedented resolution.

Generation and detection of 50 GHz surface acoustic waves by extreme ultraviolet pulses

A. A. Maznev et al.

Summary: In this study, femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses were used to excite and probe surface acoustic waves on the (001) surface of single crystal SrTiO3. Detection of SAWs was achieved through diffraction of a time-delayed probe pulse, despite the low reflectivity of the sample in the extreme ultraviolet range. A methodology for extracting SAW attenuation in the presence of a thermal grating was described, which can be used for studying ultrahigh frequency SAWs in various materials and bridging the wave vector gap in surface phonon spectroscopy.

Extreme Ultraviolet Second Harmonic Generation Spectroscopy in a Polar Metal

Emma Berger et al.

Summary: The coexistence of ferroelectricity and metallicity in LiOsO3 is a surprising phenomenon, where the novel technique of XUV-SHG reveals sensitivity to the broken inversion symmetry in the polar metal phase. This opens up possibilities for studying symmetry-breaking structural phase transitions with element specificity on femtosecond time scales.

Angstrom-Resolved Interfacial Structure in Buried Organic-Inorganic Junctions

Craig P. Schwartz et al.

Summary: Charge transport processes at interfaces play a crucial role in many processes. Here, the first soft x-ray second harmonic generation (SXR SHG) interfacial spectrum of a buried interface (boron-Parylene N) is reported. SXR SHG shows distinct spectral features that are not observed in x-ray absorption spectra, demonstrating its extraordinary interfacial sensitivity. Comparing to electronic structure calculations indicates a boron-organic separation distance of 1.9 angstrom, with changes of less than 1 angstrom resulting in easily detectable SXR SHG spectral shifts (ca. hundreds of milli-electron volts).

Solid state core-exciton dynamics in NaCl observed by tabletop attosecond four-wave mixing spectroscopy

James D. Gaynor et al.

Summary: Nonlinear wave mixing in solids with ultrafast X-rays, particularly tabletop-based attosecond noncollinear four-wave mixing spectroscopy, has been demonstrated to provide valuable insights into the electronic dynamics of materials, such as the characterization of core-excitons and their properties in NaCl. This investigation highlights the potential of tabletop attosecond FWM spectroscopies as a viable technique for time-resolved solid state measurements.
