Wave energy extraction from a floating flexible circular plate

S. Michele et al.

Summary: This study presents a theoretical model to investigate the hydrodynamics of a floating flexible circular wave energy converter. The research shows that plate elasticity increases the number of eigenfrequencies and has a positive effect on power output. The study also highlights the importance of extending theoretical studies and experimental investigations on flexible devices, which are considered the future of wave energy conversion technology.

Higher-order derivatives of the Green function in hyper-singular integral equations

Hui Liang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces alternative formulations for the higher-order derivatives of the free-surface Green function and analytical expressions for the velocities induced by a uniform dipole distribution over a flat panel. The proposed formulas are demonstrated to be superior to conventional methods for solving hyper-singular integral equations.

Numerical and experimental modelling of wave interaction with fixed and floating porous cylinders

Ed Mackay et al.

Summary: This study investigates wave forces on fixed and floating cylinders, as well as the boundary element method model. It shows that adding a porous outer cylinder can increase excitation forces, enhance damping, and reduce motion response.

A BEM model for wave forces on structures with thin porous elements

Ed Mackay et al.

Summary: A boundary element method (BEM) model is presented to study wave forces on structures with solid and porous surfaces, including linear and quadratic pressure-velocity relations. The study proposes a solution method for motion response and wave forces simultaneously, and derives hydrodynamic identities and expressions for mean drift force for combined solid-porous bodies. The study shows that quadratic pressure drop leads to asymmetric hydrodynamic coefficients and modification of the Haskind relation.

Numerical and experimental investigations into fluid resonance in a gap between two side-by-side vessels

Hui Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the free-surface response near resonance in a narrow gap between two fixed barges, revealing the issues caused by gap resonance. Experimental measurements provide reference results for numerical simulation, and an effective damping model is developed to suppress unrealistic responses.

Extending limits for wave power absorption by axisymmetric devices

R. Porter et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the theoretical possibility of extending the capture width for axisymmetric wave energy converters using generalized modes of motion. By applying a continuum approximation to the paddle motion, it is shown that a cylinder of fixed size can absorb as much power as demanded from an incident wave, although practical limitations of linear theory may be quickly reached as demand increases. The study does not delve into these limits in detail or explore further practical design considerations.

Water wave scattering by impermeable and perforated plates

Hui Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the scattering of water waves by horizontal plates within the linear potential-flow theory framework, considering both impermeable and perforated plates. Utilizing wave interference effects from multiple plates can achieve large wave amplification, while deploying an array of elliptical plates aligned with the incident wave direction shows promise for harnessing wave energy. The study provides insight into utilizing water wave energy through horizontal plates.
