Implementation of food safety management systems that meets ISO 22000:2018 and HACCP: A case study of capsule biotechnology products of chaga mushroom

Hsinjung Chen et al.

Summary: The study developed a food safety management system for a chaga mushroom biotechnology product manufacturer to meet customer quality demands and enhance reputation. Implementation of ISO22000:2018 led to a significant drop in coliforms level and decrease in defect rate for chaga products within 1 year, indicating improvements in safety and quality levels. The study highlights the importance of rapid screening for small- and medium-sized food industry enterprises and the benefits of implementing a food safety management system for capsule health food products.

The difference of regulatory effect of two Inonotus obliquus extracts on high-fat diet mice in relation to the fatty acid elongation function of gut microbiota

Jian Yu et al.

Summary: The study compared the therapeutic effects of two Inonotus obliquus extracts on high-fat diet (HFD) mice by measuring various parameters at 4 temporal points. It was found that the ethanol extract of Inonotus obliquus had a stronger effect on accumulated weight gain compared to the polysaccharide extract. The difference in regulating effect on HFD mice between the two extracts was related to the fatty acid elongation function of intestinal flora.

Screening and process optimization of ultrasound-assisted extraction of main antioxidants from sweet tea (Lithocarpus litseifolius [Hance] Chun)

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, three main antioxidants were screened from sweet tea using DPPH-spiking HPLC, with their antioxidant capacities confirmed through DPPH radical scavenging assays. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) was utilized to optimize and extract the antioxidants, resulting in higher antioxidant capacities compared to maceration extraction. Additionally, the proportions of different antioxidants in the total antioxidant capacities of the extracts varied under the optimal extraction conditions.

Antioxidant activity and phenolic profiles of ciders from the Basque Country

Andoni Zuriarrain-Ocio et al.

Summary: The study found that individual polyphenols in Basque cider contribute differently to antioxidant activity and browning, with chlorogenic acid, 4-pcoumaroylquinic acid and other polyphenols making significant contributions to antioxidant activity, while 4-p-coumaroylquinic acid and phloretin 2'-O-xyloglucoside play major roles in browning.Comparing the antioxidant activity of Basque ciders to other beverages, it was found to be similar to red wines and higher than orange juices.

Characterization of phenolic compounds and anti-acetylcholinase activity of coconut shells

Nana Li et al.

Summary: Phenolic compounds extracted from coconut shells varied in distribution and content among different parts and components. Soluble phenolics had significantly higher total phenolic content (TPC) compared to insoluble phenolics. Antioxidant activities and acetylcholinesterase inhibition activities were highly correlated with TPC, with flavonoids showing stronger correlations than phenolic acids.
