Introducing a small amount of Yttrium (Y) can improve the fracture toughness of the alloy with only a slight sacrifice of hardness, possibly due to the more uniform distribution of brittle borides phases and the increase of boron solid solution in the alloy.

Summary: Characterization of the structural and microstructural evolutions of AlCrNi alloy powders was conducted using an X-ray diffractometer, a field-emission scanning electron microscope, and a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. It was found that a single-phase Cr (Al, Ni) nanostructured solid-solution was synthesized through high-energy planetary ballmilling for 96 hours, and a decagonal quasicrystal formed after annealing at 1035 degrees C. This article investigates the formation of the decagonal quasicrystalline phase in the AlCrNi alloy system for the first time.
