Is Mesospheric Quasi Biennial Oscillation Ephemeral?

Karanam Kishore Kumar

Summary: The study discusses the time evolution of mesospheric quasi biennial oscillation using long-term meteor radar observations and TIMED Doppler Interferometer measurements. The results show the transient nature of MQBO amplitudes and their variability over time, with diverse latitudinal structures at different time periods. The study highlights discrepancies in reported amplitudes and addresses outstanding issues on MQBO ephemerality.

Stratospheric Quasi Biennial Oscillation Modulations of Migrating Diurnal Tide in the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere Over the Low and Equatorial Latitudes

M. Pramitha et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the WACCM simulations at tropical locations using meteor radar measurements and investigates the modulation of diurnal tides at global scales by the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (SQBO). It is found that there is a good correspondence between meridional diurnal tide perturbation amplitudes and the SQBO, with positive tidal perturbations during the eastward phase of SQBO and negative perturbations during the westward phase. Additionally, the equatorial electrojet strength is modulated by the SQBO over Thumba, showing the global-scale impact of SQBO on atmospheric dynamics.

Summary: This study utilized the SD-WACCM-X model to investigate migrating tidal variabilities during Antarctic sudden stratospheric warming events in 2002, 2010, and 2019, finding significant changes in tidal amplitudes in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere regions, particularly for specific tidal modes.
