The nighttime ionospheric response and occurrence of equatorial plasma irregularities during geomagnetic storms: a case study

Xin Wan et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown long-lasting daytime ionospheric enhancements of Total Electron Content (TEC) during the recovery phase of geomagnetic storms in the Asian sector. However, nighttime ionospheric behavior during such phases has not been thoroughly investigated. During two geomagnetic storms in September 2017 and August 2018, prominent daytime TEC enhancements were observed in the Asian sector, while nighttime responses were weaker. The study also found that Equatorial Plasma Irregularities (EPIs) were enhanced and extended to higher latitudes during the main phase of the storms but were largely suppressed during the recovery phases.
