Longitudinal Differences in Electron Temperature on Both Sides of Zero Declination Line in the Mid-latitude Topside Ionosphere

Han Ma et al.

Summary: This study analyzed electron temperature observations from 2010 to 2017 to explore longitudinal differences in the topside ionosphere in the northern mid-latitudes. The North American sector showed prominent longitudinal differences in Te, while the East Asian sector exhibited weaker differences, possibly due to factors such as geomagnetic activity and horizontal winds.

Anomalous Electron Temperature Increases in the Evening Equatorial Ionosphere

B. G. Fejer et al.

Summary: The study found that highly enhanced plasma temperatures in the evening equatorial ionosphere are due to large upward plasma drifts and sharply reduced plasma densities. The electron temperatures reached peak values of about 1,000K, with smaller increases observed at higher altitudes. Simulations showed that the anomaly in plasma heating below 300 km is caused by reduced electron-ion cooling rate due to upward plasma drift-induced decrease in plasma density.

An Unusually Large Electron Temperature Increase Over Arecibo Associated With an Intense Geomagnetic Storm

Xiedong Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of an intense geomagnetic storm on the electron temperature in the F-region, based on incoherent scatter radar measurements at the Arecibo Observatory. The results show a rapid increase in electron temperature and a decrease in electron density during the storm, with daytime perturbations of these parameters being negatively correlated. Analysis suggests that the increase in electron temperature may be linked to the decrease in electron density, possibly due to a reduction in the ratio of atomic oxygen to molecular nitrogen concentration.
