Surface reflection of bottom generated oceanic lee waves

L. E. Baker et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential importance of the surface in reflecting lee wave energy back into the interior using a linear model with viscosity and diffusivity. It shows that lee waves can interact with the upper ocean, resulting in enhanced vertical velocities and mixing near the surface under typical oceanic conditions.

Dissipating and Reflecting Internal Waves

Callum J. Shakespeare et al.

Summary: The article introduces a novel linear theory that spans the parameter space between two limiting cases to describe the propagation of internal waves and lee waves generated at the seafloor in the interior of the ocean. Through numerical simulations on realistic abyssal hill topography, it is found that the linear theory can replicate the kinetic energy and dissipation of highly nonlinear wave fields by selecting the linear dissipation operator appropriately.
