Transports and Pathways of the Tropical AMOC Return Flow From Argo Data and Shipboard Velocity Measurements

Franz Philip Tuchen et al.

Summary: The upper-ocean circulation of the tropical Atlantic is a complex combination of thermohaline and wind-driven flow. The AMOC return flow through the inner tropics is associated with a diapycnal upwelling of lower central water into the thermocline layer. The study provides a realistic reconstruction of the upper-ocean circulation and estimates the transport and pathway of water mass layers in the tropical Atlantic.

Atlantic Equatorial Undercurrent intensification counteracts warming-induced deoxygenation

Peter Brandt et al.

Summary: Based on long-term moored observations, the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) in the tropical Atlantic has strengthened by more than 20% from 2008 to 2018, countering deoxygenation caused by climate warming. The changes in oxygen concentrations are associated with multidecadal variability, impacting the habitat of tropical pelagic fish.
