Spatial and morphometric relationships of submarine landslides offshore west and southwest Iberia

Davide Gamboa et al.

Summary: Submarine landslides are a common geohazard in the marine environment, with higher densities observed in the proximal regions of the south and southwest margins off west and southwest Iberia. The size range of landslides is inversely proportional to their spacing and frequency, with stronger correlations between 2D and 3D parameters such as area and volume. The relationships between parameters vary across different geomorphological domains, with correlation values influenced by seafloor geomorphology.

Granular porous landslide tsunami modelling - the 2014 Lake Askja flank collapse

Matthias Rauter et al.

Summary: Tsunamis generated by landslides are devastating events. This paper presents a novel three-dimensional granular landslide and tsunami model that accurately simulates both laboratory experiments and catastrophic events. The model improves our understanding and prediction capabilities of frequent and catastrophic landslide tsunamis.

Submarine landslide megablocks show half of Anak Krakatau island failed on December 22nd, 2018

J. E. Hunt et al.

Summary: This study provides a high-resolution characterization of both subaerial and submarine components of a volcanic flank collapse, revealing the extensive failure and landslide deposit. The findings are consistent with en-masse lateral collapse scenarios, and highlight the potential for rapid island growth leading to large-scale failure. Post-collapse eruptions resulted in the burial of the scar and landslide deposit with tephra.

A database of submarine landslides offshore West and Southwest Iberia

Davide Gamboa et al.

Summary: Submarine landslides are important geohazards occurring from shallow coastal areas to deeper ocean points, with efforts made to compile databases for assessment. Seabed nature and relief are key factors influencing the location and size of landslides, with a recent database being MAGICLAND offshore Portugal.

The Horseshoe Abyssal plain Thrust could be the source of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and tsunami

Sara Martinez-Loriente et al.

Summary: The research suggests that a lithospheric thrust fault within the Horseshoe Abyssal Plain on the southwest Iberian margin could be the source of the 1755 Great Lisbon earthquake and tsunami. Tsunami simulations show that this fault can more accurately replicate reported energy propagation patterns and wave heights. Therefore, it is proposed that the reverse dip-slip mechanism, combined with the mechanical behavior of serpentinite, is the most likely candidate for the source of the 1755 event.
