Construction of fault geometry by finite-fault inversion of teleseismic data

Kousuke Shimizu et al.

Summary: A new inversion method is proposed in this study to estimate the fault geometry and rupture process of an earthquake from teleseismic P waveform data. By representing slip direction with five basic double-couple components, the proposed method can obtain fault geometry consistent with the rupture process.

Northern Chile intermediate-depth earthquakes controlled by plate hydration

Leoncio Cabrera et al.

Summary: The study investigated the seismic source properties and aftershock activity of six large magnitude intermediate-depth earthquakes in northern Chile, finding a systematic decrease in aftershock productivity for deeper events within the slab. Particularly, there was a dramatic decrease in aftershock activity below the 400-450 degrees C isotherm depth, separating high- and low-hydrated zones. Additionally, tensional focal mechanisms were observed at unexpected depths within the slab.

Immediate Foreshocks Indicating Cascading Rupture Developments for 527 M 0.9 to 5.4 Ridgecrest Earthquakes

Haoran Meng et al.

Summary: Understanding earthquake foreshocks is crucial for interpreting earthquake rupture physics and reducing seismic hazards. Immediate foreshocks identified in the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence show high resemblance to mainshock P waves, but their attributes do not necessarily scale with mainshock magnitudes. This suggests that earthquake rupture initiation may be universal but evolves stochastically, likely influenced by fine-scale fault heterogeneities.

Possible Precursory Slow-Slip to Two ML ∼3 Mainevents of the Diemtigen Microearthquake Sequence, Switzerland

V. Simon et al.

Summary: The initiation of earthquakes remains a debated topic in earthquake science, with a gap between laboratory studies and real earthquake observations. The study shows that rupture nucleation phenomena observed on the lab scale can also be imaged on the microearthquake-scale, improving the quality of seismicity patterns and immediate foreshock phenomena. This approach may help bridge the observational gap between laboratory and field studies to enhance understanding of earthquake initiation mechanisms in the future.

The generation of large earthquakes

Aitaro Kato et al.

Summary: Despite decades of studies, the processes leading to large earthquakes remain mysterious. Recent observations provide new perspectives, with evidence suggesting regional weakening before some large earthquakes. An integrated model is proposed to explain the diversity of large earthquake generation from progressive deformation to localized slip.
