Paraglacial rock-slope deformations: sudden or delayed response? Insights from an integrated numerical modelling approach

Margherita Cecilia Spreafico et al.

Summary: Glacial and paraglacial processes have a significant impact on rock slope stability in alpine environments. Understanding the mechanisms and timing of paraglacial rock slope failures is crucial. Glacial morphology, rate of deglaciation, and slope strength all influence the response of rock slopes to deglaciation.

Rock Slope Temperature Evolution and Micrometer-Scale Deformation at a Retreating Glacier Margin

Marc Hugentobler et al.

Summary: In deglaciating environments, rock slope instabilities are driven by changes in thermal and hydraulic conditions, as well as unloading due to ice melting. Heat conduction is identified as the dominant heat transfer process, while non-conductive processes are related to groundwater exchange and snowmelt infiltration. Deformation in rock slopes during deglaciation includes thermoelastic deformation, reversible strain signals correlating with pore pressure fluctuations, and irreversible deformation associated with rock mass damage accumulation.
