Chronic Inflammation in PCOS: The Potential Benefits of Specialized Pro-Resolving Lipid Mediators (SPMs) in the Improvement of the Resolutive Response

Pedro-Antonio Regidor et al.

Summary: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting 5-15% of women in their reproductive age, characterized by irregular cycles, hyperandrogenemia, and typical ultrasound features. In addition to its cardinal symptoms, PCOS is associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation. Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), derived from omega 3-polyunsaturated fatty acids, have shown potential therapeutic benefits in chronic inflammatory diseases like PCOS.

Microbiome and PCOS: State-of-Art and Future Aspects

Pierluigi Giampaolino et al.

Summary: Evidence has shown that alterations in the gut microbiome may play a role in the development of PCOS, with potential therapeutic opportunities including probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and the use of IL-22. Humanized mice receiving fecal transplants from women with PCOS have been shown to develop ovarian dysfunction, immune changes, and insulin resistance, highlighting the potential impact of the gut microbiome on PCOS.

Bariatric Surgery on Reproductive Outcomes: the Impact According to the Diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Surgical Procedures

Gemma Casals et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of bariatric surgery on fertility, pregnancy, and newborn outcomes in reproductive age women. Results showed that bariatric surgery was associated with improvement in several reproductive outcomes, especially in menstrual regularity in PCOS women. Further research is needed to clarify the impact of different bariatric surgery techniques on fertility.

Summary: SG in rats with PCOS led to a decrease in Firmicutes abundance and an increase in Bacteroidetes abundance. The levels of Bacteroides and Blautia increased, while Ruminococcus, Clostridium, and Alistipes decreased after SG. SG significantly ameliorated PCOS-related symptoms such as hyperandrogenism, disrupted ovary function, and impaired glucose tolerance.
