Global phylogeography and invasion history of the spotted lanternfly revealed by mitochondrial phylogenomics

Zhenyong Du et al.

Summary: The spotted lanternfly originated from southwestern China, and expanded northward across the Yangtze River in the late Pleistocene. South Korea populations were derived from multiple invasions from eastern China and Japan, while Japan and the United States each had only one invasion event. The United States populations originated from a single invasive event from South Korea, which served as a bridgehead for the invasion.

Mitochondrial DNA as a Molecular Marker in Insect Ecology: Current Status and Future Prospects

Zhaoke Dong et al.

Summary: Molecular techniques are powerful in insect ecology research, with mitochondrial DNA being a widely used molecular marker. While it has favorable biological properties, there are still issues to consider when using mtDNA data. Combining mtDNA with nuclear DNA markers can enhance the power of molecular data in testing phylogenetic and phylogeographic hypotheses.

Agrilus mali Matsumura (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) density and damage in wild apple Malus sieversii (Rosales: Rosaceae) forests in Central Eurasia under four different management strategies

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: In 1993, the apple buprestid invaded the Yili River valley in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China, posing a major threat to wild apple populations. A study found that a combination of biological control and spraying/pruning may help manage this invasive species and protect the ecosystem of wild apple forests in Central Eurasia.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
