Transgenic plants expressing immunosuppressive dsRNA improve entomopathogen efficacy against Spodoptera littoralis larvae

Ilaria Di Lelio et al.

Summary: Transgenic plants expressing dsRNA targeting essential insect genes have shown to be effective in controlling pests. In this study, tobacco plants were transformed to produce dsRNA targeting Sl 102 gene involved in the immune response of Spodoptera littoralis larvae. Experimental results demonstrated that larvae reared on these transgenic tobacco lines exhibited decreased gene expression, impaired encapsulation response, and increased susceptibility to insecticide. This approach could potentially reduce the use of insecticides and enhance their efficacy against mature larvae.

Evaluation of the Potential of a Lectin Extracted from Polygonum persicaria L. as a Biorational Agent against Sitophilus oryzae L.

Mehdi Khoobdel et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the insecticidal activity of a lectin extracted from Polygonum persicaria against the rice weevil. They found that the lectin, PPA, had a significant lethal effect on the weevils and caused digestive disorders and oxidative stress in the insects. The presence of a food attractant, carob extract, did not affect the insecticidal efficiency of PPA.

Summary: Arthropod crop pests account for 20% of global annual crop losses, a figure expected to rise with climate change. Humans have historically used chemical formulations to control pests, but concerns about biodiversity impacts are growing. Biotechnology is providing new options for pest control, including engineering resistant crops and insect populations.

Long non-coding RNAs and cancer metastasis: Molecular basis and therapeutic implications

Hui Ming et al.

Summary: Cancer metastasis, driven by the epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) of tumor cells, is a major cause of cancer-related deaths. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play crucial roles in regulating cancer metastasis, although their clinical application is still limited. Some lncRNAs are being evaluated as potential biomarkers for cancer staging and assessment of metastatic potential.

Whitefly hijacks a plant detoxification gene that neutralizes plant toxins

Jixing Xia et al.

Summary: Plants produce toxic secondary metabolites to defend themselves, but many plants are still eaten by insects. The whitefly has acquired a gene through horizontal gene transfer that enables it to neutralize plant defenses, enhancing its resistance. This study reveals an evolutionary mechanism where herbivores use the genetic toolkit of host plants to develop resistance to plant defenses.
