Thermodynamic properties of the Nd-Bi system via emf measurements, DFT calculations, machine learning, and CALPHAD modeling

Sanghyeok Im et al.

Summary: Thermodynamic properties of the Nd-Bi system were investigated using a combination of experimental measurements, first-principles calculations, data mining and machine learning predictions, and calculation of phase diagrams. New peritectic reaction and crystal structure of NdBi2 were confirmed, and a more complete phase diagram of the Nd-Bi system was calculated based on newly acquired experimental data and DFT-based calculations.

Zentropy Theory for Positive and Negative Thermal Expansion

Zi-Kui Liu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a general theory based on multiscale entropy to explain why volume sometimes decreases with increasing temperature. It is found that a phase at high temperatures is a statistical representation of the ground-state stable and multiple nonground-state metastable configurations. The theory provides a new understanding of the behavior of phase volume changes with temperature.

Extensible Structure-Informed Prediction of Formation Energy with improved accuracy and usability employing neural networks

Adam M. Krajewski et al.

Summary: In this paper, a new neural network-based tool is introduced for predicting the formation energies of atomic structures using the elemental and structural features of Voronoi-tessellated materials. The paper discusses the relationship between machine learning and true material-property, methods to improve generalization accuracy, incorporation of new data for specific material systems, and preliminary results on local structure relaxation. The presented work resulted in the development of three final models optimized for accuracy, performance, and computational cost.

Simulation of the ionic conductivity, thermal conductivity and thermotransport of doped zirconia using molecular dynamics

Leila Momenzadeh et al.

Summary: This study focuses on transport phenomena in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) using molecular dynamics simulation based on the Green-Kubo formalism. The results show that YSZ has a lower thermal conductivity compared to pure zirconia, with an oxygen tracer diffusion coefficient and ionic conductivity showing an activation energy of 0.85eV. The Onsager cross coefficient associated with thermotransport is negative, indicating drift of anions from cold to hot regions in a temperature gradient.

Charge Order and Suppression of Superconductivity in HgBa2CuO4+d at High Pressures

Manuel Izquierdo et al.

Summary: New insights into the superconducting properties of HgBa2CuO4 cuprates under pressure were obtained from combined measurements of electrical resistivity and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Increasing pressure induces a transition from metallic behavior to insulating charge ordering, suppressing superconductivity. The appearance of sharp Bragg peaks in X-ray diffraction patterns indicates 3D oxygen ordering accompanying charge ordering.

Thermodiffusion: The physico-chemical mechanics view

Nikolai Kocherginsky et al.

Summary: Thermodiffusion in liquids has been found to exhibit transport with or against a temperature gradient depending on the case, and a physicochemical model derived from the Smoluchowski equation has been shown to be consistent with experimental data. The Soret coefficient ST can be calculated based on the reference molar entropy, including non-ideality.

The Soret coefficients of the ternary system water/ethanol/triethylene glycol and its corresponding binary mixtures

M. Schraml et al.

Summary: Thermodiffusion in ternary mixtures, especially in highly polar and hydrogen bonding systems, shows characteristic sign changes and temperature-dependent migration of minority components. The Soret coefficients of the binaries have temperature-independent fixed points, and the decay with concentration can be related to negative excess volumes of mixing. Sign changes of the Soret coefficients in binaries can provide insights into the behavior of ternary mixtures.

The nonperturbative functional renormalization group and its applications

N. Dupuis et al.

Summary: The renormalization group is crucial in physics for determining the low-energy properties of systems and searching for ultraviolet completions. The nonperturbative functional renormalization group (FRG) method is a modern implementation of Wilson's RG, providing a framework to study models with correlated degrees of freedom over long distances. It is based on an exact functional flow equation and has applications in various fields of physics.

High-pressure phase diagrams of FeSe1-xTex: correlation between suppressed nematicity and enhanced superconductivity

K. Mukasa et al.

Summary: The systemic study on FeSe1-xTex high-pressure phase diagrams revealed that the increase in Te composition leads to the disappearance of high-pressure magnetic order and the continuous presence of pressure-induced superconducting dome near the nematic end point. Enhanced superconductivity in FeSe1-xTex is found to be correlated with the suppression of nematicity rather than magnetism, emphasizing the crucial role of nonmagnetic nematic fluctuations in high-temperature superconductivity in this system.

High-entropy polymer produces a giant electrocaloric effect at low fields

Xiaoshi Qian et al.

Summary: A new class of EC polymer has been developed, showing significantly enhanced performance under lower electric fields compared to state-of-the-art materials. This improvement is achieved by increasing the number of polar entities in the polymer through the conversion of a small number of chlorofluoroethylene groups into covalent double bonds. The polymer displays high-entropy polar phases with low energy barrier for electric-field-induced switching, maintaining performance for over one million cycles at low fields suitable for practical EC cooling applications.

Maxwell relation, giant (negative) electrocaloric effect, and polarization hysteresis

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: The electrocaloric effect (ECE) in dielectrics is characterized by isothermal entropy change and adiabatic temperature change induced by external electric fields. The Maxwell relation provides a convenient way to deduce the ECE from polarization data in ferroelectrics. The indirect method can result in significantly different ECE values compared to direct measurements in practical ferroelectric materials.

Elucidating the Factors That Cause Cation Diffusion Shutdown in Spinel-Based Electrodes

Sanjeev Krishna Kolli et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the diffusion of guest cations within spinel intercalation compounds using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The results show a strong concentration dependence of cation diffusion coefficient, with a critical topological weakness of the spinel crystal structure leading to highly correlated cation diffusion at intermediate-to-high guest cation concentrations. The findings provide guidance for tailoring the concentration dependence of cation diffusion coefficients to reduce sluggish diffusion at high cation concentrations in spinel and other anion hosts.

Multipolar nematic state of nonmagnetic FeSe based on DFT plus U

Takemi Yamada et al.

Summary: By utilizing density-functional theory, the origin of the nematic state in FeSe was investigated, revealing that increasing the on-site Coulomb interaction U results in topological changes in the Fermi surfaces of the normal state before the emergence of a nematic ground state. The nematic ground state is found to be a multipolar state with antiferrohexadecapoles and ferromultipoles on each Fe site, with cooperative coupling between different multipolar representations playing a crucial role.
