Dengue epidemiological characteristic in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Malaysia

Chai Jian Tay et al.

Summary: Despite various interventions by the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the number of dengue cases in Malaysia continues to increase. This study constructed a transmission model based on dengue incidence data and estimated the transmission rates in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The results indicate that the dengue infection rate is a critical parameter for dengue transmission, and control strategies should focus on reducing this rate. The predictive tests and numerical simulations in this study provide useful insights for analyzing the effect of mosquito intervention in reducing dengue prevalence in Malaysia.

Understanding the effects of individual awareness and vector controls on malaria transmission dynamics using multiple optimal control

Meksianis Z. Ndii et al.

Summary: The study found that reducing the contact between humans and mosquitoes is crucial for lowering the number of malaria cases, with awareness programs and vector control playing a key role. Global sensitivity analysis identified biting rate, transmission probabilities, and mosquito numbers as the most influential parameters. Optimal control approach indicated that control strategies should be implemented at a higher level for effectiveness.

The effect of demographic and environmental variability on disease outbreak for a dengue model with a seasonally varying vector population

Kaniz Fatema Nipa et al.

Summary: Seasonal changes in temperature, humidity, and rainfall have an impact on vector survival and mosquito emergence, affecting the dynamics of vector-borne disease outbreaks. Recent studies suggest that the average basic reproduction number is not enough to predict outbreaks accurately. Therefore, further research on time-nonhomogeneous stochastic models provides a better understanding of the risk of dengue outbreaks.

Population Dynamics of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in Two Rural Villages in Southern Mexico: Baseline Data for an Evaluation of the Sterile Insect Technique

Carlos F. Marina et al.

Summary: The study found that Aedes aegypti populations were higher during the dry season and at the start of the rainy season, while populations of Ae. albopictus were lower during most of the dry season, but increased during the rainy season and became dominant by the end of the rainy season in both villages. Aedes albopictus was also the dominant species in the zones of natural vegetation surrounding both villages. The effectiveness of a sterile insect technique-based vector control program could be evaluated in future studies on isolated Ae. aegypti populations in rural villages.

Elisabet M. Benitez et al.

Summary: This study developed temporal predictive models for Ae. aegypti oviposition activity using vegetation and meteorological variables as predictors, finding that vegetation index, vapor pressure of water, precipitation, and photoperiod all have impacts on the average number of eggs collected weekly. The research emphasized the important role played by climatic variables such as temperature, precipitation, and vapor pressure in Ae. aegypti oviposition activity.

Traveling wave of a reaction-diffusion vector-borne disease model with nonlocal effects and distributed delay

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the existence and nonexistence of traveling wave solutions for a diffusive vector-borne disease model with nonlocal reaction and distributed delays, using the basic reproduction number R-0 as a threshold. It is found that the model admits traveling waves based on the value of R-0 and a critical wave speed c(m)* > 0. These theoretical results are then applied to dengue fever epidemics, studying the impact of various factors on the threshold speed c(m)*.

Case-area targeted interventions (CATI) for reactive dengue control: Modelling effectiveness of vector control and prophylactic drugs in Singapore

Oliver J. Brady et al.

Summary: CATI strategies may be effective for dengue control, especially in lower density areas with large intervention radii. They are predicted to be more effective with prophylactic drugs and may interrupt transmission chains if rapidly deployed, but may lose effectiveness in areas with high transmission rates or low case detection rates. Controlled field trials are needed to assess their practical application.

Optimal control problem and backward bifurcation on malaria transmission with vector bias

Dipo Aldila et al.

Summary: This article applies a mathematical model to study the spread of malaria, considering vector bias, saturated treatment, and optimal control. The analysis shows that when the basic reproduction number (R-0) is less than one, the disease-free equilibrium is locally stable. Results suggest that fumigation and vector bias are key parameters affecting the magnitude of R-0.
