METABOLIC: high-throughput profiling of microbial genomes for functional traits, metabolism, biogeochemistry, and community-scale functional networks

Zhichao Zhou et al.

Summary: Advances in microbiome science have been driven by the ability to study and infer microbial ecology from genomes. METABOLIC is a scalable software that allows for the study of microbial ecology and biogeochemistry using genomes at the resolution of individual organisms and/or microbial communities. It provides annotation of microbial genomes, metabolic pathway analyses, and determination of microbial contributions to biogeochemical transformations and cycles. METABOLIC is a versatile tool that can be used with various metagenomic datasets, from diverse environments such as marine subsurface, terrestrial subsurface, and human gut.

Hydrogen sulfide toxicity in the gut environment: Meta-analysis of sulfate-reducing and lactic acid bacteria in inflammatory processes

Dani Dordevic et al.

Summary: The review explores the impact of hydrogen sulfide on gut environment and microbiota, with a focus on sulfate-reducing bacteria and lactic acid bacteria. Through meta-analysis, it is found that lactic acid bacteria have more pronounced inhibitory effects on inflammatory bowel diseases, providing potential for further confirmations in future studies.

The Capacity to Produce Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) via Cysteine Degradation Is Ubiquitous in the Human Gut Microbiome

Domenick J. Braccia et al.

Summary: This study highlights the role of hydrogen sulfide in maintaining physiological balance and the potential mechanisms of H2S production by gut microbiota. The analysis of metagenomic data from healthy subjects and metatranscriptomic data from individuals with different conditions reveals the abundance of putative cysteine-degrading bacteria and their possible implications in human health.
