Perturbation of the gut microbiome by Prevotella spp. enhances host susceptibility to mucosal inflammation

Aida Iljazovic et al.

Summary: The colonization of the intestinal microbiota with Prevotella genus has been linked to exacerbation of intestinal inflammation in mice. This study found that Prevotella intestinalis alters the composition and function of the ecosystem, leading to a reduction in short-chain fatty acids, specifically acetate, and a decrease in IL-18 levels, which exacerbates intestinal inflammation. Supplementation of IL-18 can alleviate the inflammation associated with Prevotella colonization.

Summary: The study demonstrates that rejuvenation of the gut microbiome by fecal microbiota transplantation from young mice can reverse aging-induced differences in the immune system, metabolome, and transcriptome, and improve specific cognitive deficits.
