Abnormal Levels of Some Biomarkers of Immune Activation Despite Very Early Treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus

Samuel R. Schnittman et al.

Summary: While early-ART initiators restore near-normal levels of many inflammatory markers, the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan catabolism remains abnormally high. Because this pathway confers adaptive immune defects and predicts tuberculosis and cancer progression, this it may contribute to persistent risks of these complications in this setting.

Butyrate in Energy Metabolism: There Is Still More to Learn

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: Butyrate, as a main product of gut microbial fermentation, plays an important role in regulating whole body energy homeostasis. Research has shown that butyrate has multiple effects on metabolic health, including thermogenesis, lipid and glucose metabolism, appetite, inflammation, and influence on gut microbiota. Through pathways such as G protein-coupled receptors (GPRs) and acting as a histone deacetylase inhibitor, butyrate also impacts cellular systems.

Longitudinal Changes in Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) Over the Course of 24 Months of Lactation

Jasmine F. Plows et al.

Summary: In a longitudinal study of Hispanic mother-infant pairs, it was found that the majority of HMOs in breast milk decrease in concentration over lactation, except for 3FL and 3'SL which significantly increase. Further research is needed to fully understand the functions of these HMOs.

Summary: The study compared birth anthropometrics of HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU) and HIV-unexposed (HU) infants in Cape Town, South Africa, finding that HEU infants had lower birth weight-for-age (WAZ). Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms and clinical significance of these differences.

Potential Role of L-Carnitine in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Alina Kepka et al.

Summary: L-carnitine plays a vital role in the mitochondrial metabolism of fatty acids in the central nervous system and has been found to be altered in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Monitoring L-carnitine levels and acylcarnitine profiles can be useful in diagnosing and treating ASD. Supplementation of L-carnitine may help alleviate symptoms in ASD patients.

Summary: Research has shown that the gut microbiota plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of anorexia nervosa, with dysbiosis of the microbiome. Patients with AN exhibit substantial interindividual variation in their gut microbiome compared to healthy controls, indicating altered bacteriome functions.
