Influence of Extractives Content and Lignin Quality ofEucalyptusWood in the Mass Balance of Pyrolysis Process

Thiago de Paula Protasio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of wood lignin composition on charcoal production efficiency inEucalyptus. The results suggest a positive relationship between lignin content and composition with carbon and hydrogen retained in the charcoal. Specifically, certainEucalyptusgenotypes showed better wood quality for charcoal production, highlighting the importance of lignin composition analysis for improving clone classification.

The Effect of Carbonization on the Wood Anatomy of Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel

Edy Eime Pereira Barauna et al.

Summary: This study examined the anatomical characteristics of the wood and charcoal of Sclerolobium paniculatum, finding that despite some quantitative changes, the qualitative anatomical features of the wood can be maintained after carbonization. These results can serve as a valuable database for identifying charcoals produced from this wood in the future.

Charcoal productivity and quality parameters for reliable classification of Eucalyptus clones from Brazilian energy forests

Thiago de Paula Protasio et al.

Summary: This study investigates tree growth characteristics as a parameter for the improvement of selection and classification of Eucalyptus clones for charcoal production. Clones with certain characteristics, such as DBH >= 15.1 cm, WBD >= 560 kg/m(3), and gravimetric yield >= 35%, can increase brick kilns productivity and produce denser charcoals. It is not recommended to use clones with WBD <= 500 kg/m(3) for steel charcoal production. The hybrid E. urophylla x E. camaldulensis (clone 1004), E. urophylla (clone 1009), and E. grandis hybrid (clone 1039) are highlighted for their productivity and quality.

The deposition of carbohydrates and lignin in the cell walls of Calamus simplicifolius during development

Kun Wang et al.

Summary: The deposition of lignin and carbohydrates in different cells and morphologically distinct cell wall layers during the development of Calamus simplicifolius varies in sequence and concentration. Carbohydrates concentration is highest in fibers, while lignin concentration is highest in vessels. The deposition rate of these substances in cell wall layers is rapid at early stages and slows down later.

Estimating hardness and density of wood and charcoal by near-infrared spectroscopy

Raul de Abreu Neto et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to establish multivariate models to estimate dynamic hardness and density of wood and charcoal based on near-infrared spectra. The results show the potential of NIR technology for fast and reliable estimation of physical and mechanical properties of charcoal based on spectra recorded on charcoal and even from wood before pyrolysis.
