Quasi-operational forecast guidance of extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani over the Bay of Bengal using high-resolution mesoscale models

Shyama Mohanty et al.

Summary: Tropical cyclone Fani over the Bay of Bengal is the first extreme severe cyclonic storm of the season, causing substantial casualties in Odisha. Both the WRF and HWRF models accurately predicted the genesis stage of Fani five days in advance, with good agreement on track.

Social media and early warning systems for natural disasters: A case study of Typhoon Etau in Japan

Katsushige Kitazawa et al.

Summary: This study explores public responses on social media to Early Warning Systems using a case study of the 2015 typhoon in Japan. Findings suggest that while emergency warnings increase public attention, they do not necessarily lead to more discussions on evacuation actions. However, there seems to be a shift in public focus from awareness to preparation and action on social media during crises.

A new drought monitoring approach: Vector Projection Analysis (VPA)

Bokyung Son et al.

Summary: A new drought monitoring approach using VPA and VPID was developed, which considers multiple drought indicators and can be adopted for different types of drought based on user selection. The evaluation of VPID showed good agreement with surface-based drought indices across the CONUS and East Asia. The proposed approach can be applied to any region with different combinations of surface-based drought indices and satellite-derived drought factors.

Future global socioeconomic risk to droughts based on estimates of hazard, exposure, and vulnerability in a changing climate

Yujie Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the consistent and equitable global drought risk assessment for multiple regions, populations, and economic sectors under various climate change scenarios. Climate change is projected to increase future drought hazards, leading to damages to socioeconomic systems. The findings suggest that the inequality in future socioeconomic risk to drought among countries is predicted to increase with climate change.

Developing a new socio-economic drought index for monitoring drought proliferation: a case study of Upper Ewaso Ngiro River Basin in Kenya

Duncan Maina Kimwatu et al.

Summary: The study focused on developing a novel socio-economic drought index (SeDI) to monitor drought severity, which showed that the new index was more sensitive to river discharge and could serve as an early warning tool for reducing climate-related risks and loss of life and livelihood.

A case study: bivariate drought identification on the Andong dam, South Korea

Jaewon Kwak et al.

Summary: This study proposes supplementary criteria for quantitatively identifying drought in reservoirs, specifically on the Andong dam in South Korea, to allow more time for implementing countermeasures. By using the SBI and SSVI indices, drought can be identified earlier and a bivariate drought identification diagram derived for better applicability.
