Regional brain atrophy and cognitive decline depend on definition of subjective cognitive decline

Cassandra Morrison et al.

Summary: Using different methods to define subjective cognitive decline (SCD) can affect the results of volume differences and cognitive decline findings among cognitively normal older adults in this study.

White Matter Abnormalities in Retired Professional Rugby League Players with a History of Concussion

David K. Wright et al.

Summary: This study examined the white matter microstructure differences between retired professional Australian National Rugby League (NRL) players with a history of multiple concussions and age- and education-matched controls with no history of brain trauma. The NRL players scored significantly higher on the alcohol use disorder identification test (AUDIT), and the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) revealed significant differences in white matter regions of NRL players compared to controls. The findings suggest potential long-term neurological consequences of multiple concussions in collision sports.

Video Analysis and Verification of Direct Head Impacts Recorded by Wearable Sensors in Junior Rugby League Players

Lauchlan Carey et al.

Summary: This study found that the majority (90.4%) of head impacts >= 20g recorded by the X-patch(TM) sensor were verified by video, with forwards experiencing direct head impacts more often than backs. The most common impact event during games was a defender's arm directly impacting the head of the ball carrier, accounting for 21.3% of all impacts.

Structural imaging outcomes in subjective cognitive decline: Community vs. clinical-based samples

Lorenzo Pini et al.

Summary: Research suggests that there are both similarities and differences in brain atrophy patterns between SCD clinical and community samples. In SCD-community, the temporal cortex is affected, while SCD-clinical exhibits a more complex pattern of atrophy, possibly due to a more heterogeneous sample reporting neuropsychiatric symptoms along with preclinical AD.

Age of First Exposure to Contact and Collision Sports and Later in Life Brain Health: A Narrative Review

Grant L. Iverson et al.

Summary: Current research does not clearly support the theory that exposure to tackle football before the age of 12 is associated with later cognitive impairment or mental health problems. While literature on former NFL players is mixed, studies of current athletes do not show significant negative effects from playing tackle football before the age of 12.

A Case-Control Study of Tackle-Based Head Injury Assessment (HIA) Risk Factors in the National Rugby League

Andrew J. Gardner et al.

Summary: This study aimed to replicate findings in professional rugby league by examining the association between tackle characteristics and head injury events. The results showed that tacklers had a higher propensity for head injuries compared to ball carriers, with the highest risk occurring when the tackler was upright and when head contact was either very low or high. The lowest risk of head injury for tacklers was found when their head was in proximity with the ball carrier's torso.
