Modulatory effects of cognitive exertion on regional functional connectivity of the salience network in women with ME/CFS: A pilot study

Riccardo Manca et al.

Summary: This pilot study investigated the association between postexertional malaise (PEM) in ME/CFS and changes in functional connectivity (FC) of the salience network (SN) and the default-mode network (DMN). Results showed that cognitive exertion induced increases in fatigue and pain in ME/CFS patients, with alterations in FC between different brain regions. Specifically, higher FC increases were found between the right insular seed and frontal and subcortical areas in patients, correlating with worsening symptoms.

High Prevalence of Perineural Cysts in Patients with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Mieke Hulens et al.

Summary: The prevalence of Tarlov cysts (TCs) in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) was found to be three times higher than in the general population. This observation supports the hypothesis that symptomatic TCs, FM, and CFS may share the same pathophysiological mechanism of moderately increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure causing irritation of neurons and axons in dorsal root ganglia.

Theta activity from frontopolar cortex, mid-cingulate cortex and anterior cingulate cortex shows different roles in cognitive planning performance

Marcos Domic-Siede et al.

Summary: The study reveals the importance of cognitive planning in human goal-directed behavior, with different brain regions playing specific roles in the planning process. Activity in the prefrontal cortex is associated with increased time needed for plan elaboration, while activity in the frontopolar cortex is negatively correlated with execution time, indicating its role in efficiency and accuracy in plan execution. Theta activity in different brain regions reflects high cognitive demand and the successful generation of self-made plans.

Undine-Sophie Deumer et al.

Summary: ME/CFS is a chronic systemic disease with various complex symptoms and varying severity. There are currently no reliable biomarkers for diagnosis, and the pathogenesis of the disease may be related to infectious, genetic, hormonal factors, gut microbiota, and non-coding RNA.
