The artemisinin analog SM934 alleviates dry eye disease in rodent models by regulating TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling

Fang-ming Yang et al.

Summary: Research shows that SM934 has therapeutic potential for dry eye disease, as it increases tear secretion, maintains conjunctival goblet cells, reduces corneal damage, and decreases levels of inflammatory mediators. Additionally, SM934 reduces the accumulation of TLR4-expressing macrophages in the conjunctiva and suppresses the expression of inflammasome components.

Repurposing Antimalarials to Tackle the COVID-19 Pandemic

Sanjeev Krishna et al.

Summary: Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) have shown in vitro inhibition against SARS-CoV-2 and have anti-inflammatory effects that can help in the treatment of severe COVID-19 cases. Clinical studies on the effectiveness of ACTs, particularly artesunate/pyronaridine, for COVID-19 infections are now supported by sufficient evidence.

Safety and efficacy of artemisinin-piperaquine for treatment of COVID-19: an open-label, non-randomised and controlled trial

Guoming Li et al.

Summary: There are no effective therapies for patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). In patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19, the time to reach undetectable SARS-CoV-2 was significantly shorter in the artemisinin-piperaquine group than that in the control group. However, physicians should consider QT interval changes before using artemisinin-piperaquine.

Artesunate inhibits melanoma progression in vitro via suppressing STAT3 signaling pathway

Mehmet Berkoz et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that artesunate inhibits cancer cell proliferation by inducing apoptosis, suppressing cell migration, invasion, and colony formation, likely by blocking the STAT3 pathway and related protein expressions. It suggests that artesunate may be a promising candidate for melanoma treatment.

Dihydroartemisinin: A Potential Natural Anticancer Drug

Xiaoshuo Dai et al.

Summary: This article comprehensively summarizes the latest progress and research findings on the anticancer activities of dihydroartemisinin (DHA), focusing on its molecular mechanisms and pharmacological effects. It also discusses new methods to improve DHA's bioavailability and its synergistic anti-tumor effects with other clinical drugs. Additionally, it highlights the need for further research on the anticancer effects of DHA to provide strong theoretical support for its use as an anticancer drug.
