Real-world particle emissions and secondary aerosol formation from a diesel oxidation catalyst and scrubber equipped ship operating with two fuels in a SECA area

Panu Karjalainen et al.

Summary: This study found that using scrubbers and low-sulfur fuel in SECA can effectively reduce SO2 concentrations on ships. During sailing, the emission of PM from heavy fuel oil was higher than that from marine gas oil, and reducing engine load increased the exhaust concentrations of black carbon.

Secondary organic aerosol formation from straw burning using an oxidation flow reactor

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from wheat straw burning was investigated using a Gothenburg: Potential Aerosol Mass (Go: PAM) reactor. The study found that the water content had significant effects on the flaming stage but not on the non-flaming stage. Furthermore, the enhancement ratio of OA was higher during the non-flaming stages, and the mass spectrum of primary wheat burning organic aerosols resembled that of resolved biomass burning organic aerosols (BBOA).

Summary: The study in Yangtze River Delta region indicates the significant impact of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, with a good correlation between secondary organic carbon (SOC) and odd oxygen (Ox) showing the important role of photochemical reactions in SOA formation.

Secondary aerosol formation from a Chinese gasoline vehicle: Impacts of fuel (E10, gasoline) and driving conditions (idling, cruising)

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: Chassis dynamometer experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of vehicle speed and usage of ethanol-blended gasoline on the formation and evolution of vehicular secondary organic aerosol using a Gothenburg Potential Aerosol Mass reactor. The results showed that SOA formed rapidly and the density increased with exposure to hydroxyl radicals. The study also found no significant difference in SOA formation between pure gasoline and E10, suggesting the presence of missing precursors.

Characterization of primary and aged wood burning and coal combustion organic aerosols in an environmental chamber and its implications for atmospheric aerosols

Amir Yazdani et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of aging on secondary organic aerosol concentrations and compositions from wood burning and coal combustion emissions. Results showed that there was an approximately 3-fold enhancement in organic aerosol concentration after aging, with distinct functional group compositions for aged emissions from different sources.
