Fabrication of industrial-level polymer photonic crystal films at ambient temperature Based on uniform core/shell colloidal particles

Huateng Li et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a low-temperature, solvent-free technique for the production of large-scale polymer photonic crystal films. By synthesizing core-interlayer-shell colloidal particles and using an industrial roll-to-roll process, large-area polymer PC films were successfully fabricated for the first time at ambient temperature, showcasing great potential for industrial applications such as displays, sensors, and anti-counterfeiting.

Gap Sensitivity Reveals Universal Behaviors in Optimized Photonic Crystal and Disordered Networks

Michael A. Klatt et al.

Summary: Through numerical computations, we discovered universal behaviors in the gap sensitivity of photonic band gap structures, both in crystal and disordered networks, with a universal formula approximating the behavior in 1D quarter-wave stack structures. This universal behavior could provide insights into PBG formation and guidance for designing novel photonic heterostructures.

An Experimental and Theoretical Determination of Oscillatory Shear-Induced Crystallization Processes in Viscoelastic Photonic Crystal Media

Chris E. Finlayson et al.

Summary: This study presents the oscillatory shear-ordering dynamics of viscoelastic photonic crystal media using an optical shear cell. It tracks monotonic crystallization processes by measuring photonic stopband transmission as a function of strain amplitude, oscillation frequency, and temperature. A spatio-temporal model is developed to study crystallization due to shear-dependent interlayer viscosity, showing the transition from interparticle disorder to order and the effects of competing shear-induced flow degradation processes on amplitude and frequency dependence. The extracted crystallization timescales qualitatively agree with experimental observations.
