High-Performance Ammonium Cobalt Phosphate Nanosheet Electrocatalyst for Alkaline Saline Water Oxidation

Zhongxin Song et al.

Summary: A novel 2D nanosheet ammonium cobalt phosphate hydrate catalyst has been developed for efficient oxygen evolution in alkaline saline water electrolysis, achieving high current densities at record-low overpotentials. The activation of Co (II) ions to Co (III) species constructs electrocatalytic active sites, providing larger active surface area and more surface-exposed active sites for facilitating oxidation reactions. The environmentally-benign synthesis route and cost-effective alternative to noble metals make this catalyst highly feasible for practical manufacturing.

Efficient oxygen reduction reaction by a highly porous, nitrogen-doped carbon sphere electrocatalyst through space confinement effect in nanopores

Zheyang Mo et al.

Summary: This study prepared a highly porous nitrogen-doped carbon sphere (NPC) electrocatalyst through the carbonization of biomass carbon spheres mixed with urea and zinc chloride in N-2 atmosphere, demonstrating superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance. The space confinement effect from microporous and mesoporous structures was found to induce the further reduction of oxygen species, leading to the preferred overall four electron reduction ORR process. This work suggests that space confinement can be a new approach to enhance the ORR performance of precious-metal-free, nitrogen-doped carbon electrocatalysts.
